Biking and Hiking

Approximately 18,000 feet of climbing on foot and on tandem over 6 amazing days with Kim in Torridon and Skye. First, "the big one" - the Bealach Na Ba and the Applecross peninsula on the tandem - very happy to have to managed that (we wonder how many tandems have gone up there before us?). Punctured on the way down due to overheating the wheel rims with all the braking on the 6 mile, 2000' descent back to sea level. Then up Beinn Alligin on Monday. Then cycled to Elgol (return) from Broadford on Skye - planned as a "recovery ride" but was hillier than expected (2000' of climbing). Raced up Blaven on Wednesday and on the penultimate day an exciting and memorable romp on the Cullin ridge in sublime conditions, bagging Am Basteir (omitting its tooth!!!) and Bruach na Frithe. Finished the week with a return south, back to the dodgy weather, and a damp 30 mile loop of Perthshire taking in a section of the Etape Caledona course and a new (to me) steep climb up into Glen

Day 1: the big one! Can we do it?

Of course we can...

2000' up - Bealach Na Ba summit

Glorious Applecross

Well earned coffee and cake stop at Applecross

The amazing Applecross peninsula, looking over to Skye

Day 2: Beinn Alligin in Torridon - Kim poses in front of the Horns

Loch Torridon

On Beinn Alligin with its Horns and Liathach behind

Beinn Alligin

From Beinn Alligin, looking way out over Wester Ross

Descending the Beinn towards the Horns

Loch Torridon endlessly broods

Kim connects on the middle Horn!

Scrambling downwards...

Day 3: recovery ride to position ourselves for Blaven - was tougher than expected

The tandem is dwarfed under Blaven, on route to Elgol

Honeycomb rock at Elgol shore

Kim, the honeycomb rocks and the Cuillin sparkling beyond

Still on day 3 but Kim eyes up and contemplates day 5!!!

Very contented tandemists at Elgol

Day 4: gorgeous sunrise from the motorhome, camped under Blaven

The sun rises on Blaven.....

So Kim packs a rucksack because we want to get up there!

Early morning Blaven approach

Nearing the summit of Blaven

The Red Cuillin from Blaven

Gobsmacked by our luck with the weather on Blaven

On Blaven, with the Black Cuillin behind

She's eyeing up day 5 again!

Loch Slapin from Blaven second summit

Day 5: camped under today's challenge

On route up Am Basteir, appoaching the moody Pinnacle Ridge of Sgurr nan Gillean

Onto the scary Cuillin ridge at last

And just as scary looking in that direction too! Am Basteir behind

Starting up from the col to Am Basteir

On top of the world! Well, on top of Am Basteir, but might as well have been the top of the world!

Safely back to the col - phew!

Coffee on the ridge in front of Sgurr na Gillean

Kim peers through a gap on the ridge back to day 4: Blaven

Kim summits Sgurr a’ Fionn Choire, the top between Am Basteir and Bruach na Frithe

Summit of the second Munro - Bruach an Frithe

Kim. In heaven!

Looking back to main ridge as we descend toward Sligachan

Last look back at the mean looking Cuilin ridge

Heading down into the sunset

Sligachan in sight at last, but a fair walk out still to go

The sun finally sets on our hills just before we reach the pub

Day 6: quick piece of cake before the big climb on a damp 30 mile Perthshire circuit to complete a fabulous week
